Children Questioned in Case of Missing Grandma

Beverly Kaye, 74
Louisville, KY

Brian Kaye, 10, and his sister Anna, 7, of Louisville, KY, were held for questioning regarding possible wrongdoing in the case of their missing 74 year old grandmother.

Beverly Kaye was discovered missing at 7 p.m. last night by her daughter Nancy.  "I got home from work a little before 7," reported Nancy, "and the back door was open. I went upstairs to check on my family.  I found the kids in their rooms.  Brian, my darling boy,  was playing Bludgeon Your Neighbor on his new Playstation, and Anna, my little angel, was trimming the cat's tail.  But Mom was nowhere to be found.  I called the police immediately."

Beverly Kaye moved in with her daughter's family three months ago, to help look after the children after the divorce.  The family was unaware at the time that Beverly was suffering from memory loss and disorientation.

"I still don't believe it," said her daughter Nancy, "My mother is the same as she's always been."  Upon further questioning, Nancy revealed the following information, "Well, there was the time she dried her clothes in my oven.  I'd seen Kramer do it on an episode of Seinfeld, so I thought maybe Mom was just getting a little eccentric.  Then a few days later, I caught her trying to bake some potatoes in the dryer.   I was just so relieved that it wasn't a lasagna that I didn't make a big deal of it."

Beverly was last seen in public with her grandchildren at 5:30 pm in a Pizza Hut near the family's home.  "They ordered a medium pizza with double cheese and bell peppers," reported employee Rose Thomas.  "Actually," she added thoughtfully, "it might have been mushrooms."

Did the family display any unusual behavior while dining?  Pizza Hut patron Tom Fellows reports, "Come to think of it, I did see that the grandmother picked all the mushrooms off her slice. Now, why order a mushroom pizza if you don't like mushrooms?  That's what I'd like to know.""

According to Brian and Anna Kaye, Beverly drove them home after dinner and they all entered the house together.  "Mom told me I was supposed to keep an eye on her," admitted Brian, "but looking after a 74 year old is a lot of work for a guy my age.  I didn't do a very good job."

The children were taken into police custody at 8 p.m. last night for questioning regarding any possible wrongdoing in the case of their missing grandmother. Sgt. Ivana Donat was assigned to the case.  "We took the potentially dangerous suspects into the precinct last night for questioning," said Donat, "They did not seem to understand the seriousness of their situation.  Anna was very excited to be up past her bedtime.  Brian said it was 'cool!' when I threatened to put him behind bars.  I was just about to get tough with them when their mother called and said that Beverly had been spotted trying to cross a busy freeway, naked.   The children were released back into their mother's custody at 8:30 p.m."

"We're just relieved that Mom is fine and that things can go back to normal now," said Nancy Kaye. "I knew there would be a simple explanation for all of this."
